The utility feed disappears. From this instant the site is running on stored energy — UPS batteries measured in minutes, not hours.
The transfer switch confirms the loss is real rather than a momentary dip, then calls for the set to start. Too eager and it chases every flicker; too slow and the batteries are spending.

The breaker closes and the whole site arrives in one block. Voltage dips, then has to recover — and how deep that dip may go, how long recovery may take, is precisely what an ISO 8528 performance class fixes. This is the number a consultant reads first.
